Arthur Bultitude Violin Bow, England, c.1960
This is a lovely violin bow by Arthur Bultitude, c.1960. The bow is silver-mounted, with a length of 731mm and weight of 59.7g. The handle is stamped “A.R. BULTITUDE” on both sides, and “England” near the adjuster. It is also stamped “1960” and “19” under the frog.
There are many aspects of this bow to be admired, including the figure present in the wood, as well as the graceful silverwork and head-shaping that Bultitude is known for.
This is a fine example of Bultitude’s work made shortly after he left the W.E. Hill & Sons workshop. Bultitude lived from 1908-1990, and worked at Hills from 1922-1961. He started at the age of 14, making violin and bow cases, and then begun training with W. Retford three years later. After WWII service, he returned to Hills as appointed manager. It’s believed that he made more than two thousand bows, and with this legacy he has earned the place of one of England’s most notable bowmakers.
This bow is in excellent condition and is original in all principal parts. It is certified by Tim Toft Violins.
