Cello Bow by James Tubbs, London, c.1870

This is a silver-mounted cello bow by England’s most celebrated bow maker, James Tubbs (1835-1921). The weight is 82.5g, and the length is 715mm. The bow is stamped “J. Tubbs” on the handle, and is from his first-period in London c.1870. His stamp changed to “JAS. TUBBS” c.1878 to avoid confusion with his brother.

Tubbs’ accomplishment in work and legacy is one of the few to truly rival that of the French makers! This bow is a lovely demonstation why, featuring pernambuco of great quality, his characteristic ferrule metalwork, and a remarkably clean and well-shaped head, The bow has a great balance and feel in the hand – many cellists will enjoy this!

James is the son and pupil of William Tubbs. While his work follows classical french making, the influence of the Dodd family is clear, where William learnt with Edward/James Dodd.

James established himself as an independant maker, but was also associated with the W.E. Hill & Son firm. Unfortunately his relationship with the Hills went out the window after they won exhibition medals with Tubbs bows stamped under their name. In spite, Tubbs would restamp any bows made for them that he encountered again.

His bows remain popular since he was alive, and they have been owned by figures of music such as Edward Elgar, Wilhelmj, Piatti, and even today Hilary Hahn.
