Karel van der Meer Violin Bow, Amsterdam, c.1900-20
This Karel van der Meer violin bow, made in Amsterdam c.1900-20 is octagonal and silver mounted. The length is 739mm and the weight is 57.6g. The handle is stamped “K.V.D. MEER AMSTERDAM” – according to John Dilworth, this particular shop stamp is mainly attributed to the Mirecourt bow maker Auguste Toussaint
Karel van der Meer was originally a violinist in the Concertgebouw Orchestra before becoming a luthier in 1892. He partnered with Van Roosmalen to become the predominant centre of lutherie in the Netherlands for this time, and a number of great dutch luthiers started their career there, including Max Moller and Johann Stuber – this meant that there’s a physical variety of good work out there which bears the VDM shop name
The bow has received a new silver lapping and thumb leather. The condition is good, mainly to be noted is the handle has a few old restorations primarily for use/player wear, as well as general wear overall
