Violin Bow by H. Walter Zapf, Markneukirchen, c.1960

This is an octagonal and nickel-mounted H. Walter Zapf bow made in Siebenbrunn, Markneukirchen, c.1960. The length is 745mm, and the weight is 60.9g. The bow is stamped both ” *H. WALTER ZAPF* ” and “GERMANY” on the handle.

This is a solid-made and affordable bow for both professional players and advanced students. The bow features nice pernambuco, a well shaped head and a nicely made frog. The stick is strong, allowing a nice articulation and both clarity and warmth in tone.

The maker Walter Zapf is recorded in the Brompton’s Book of Violin and Bow Makers as being active since 1925. There were other luthiers in the Zapf family. It is quite likely that there were multiple people working in the Zapf workshop to produce bows. Presently, H. Walter Zapf is a line of bows that has been bought and continued by GEWA, however the older original bows are definitely of a higher quality.

This bow is in excellent clean condition.
